Mesothelioma treatment
Treatment such as chemotherapy, surgery and radiation may help increase a mesothelioma patient's quality of life and life
expectancy.

Mesothelioma - surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy
There are several types of treatment available for patients with mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma cancer, which is classified into three according to the area infected by each of these, is caused by asbestos particles inhaled mostly at workplaces. The three types are the pleural mesothelioma (that affects the mesothelium around the lung cavities), the peritoneal (found in the lining of the abdomen) and the pericardial (which attacks the heart cavities). The former, which attacks the lining of the lungs, is also called asbestos lung mesothelioma because it affects the lung cavities and is caused by asbestos.
The most commonly used mesothelioma treatment options are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Surgical treatments for mesothelioma:
1. diagnostic surgery
2. curative surgery
3. palliative surgery
Most forms of chemotherapy involve the intravenous administration of drugs such as Alimta and Cisplatin.
Chemotherapeutic drugs are targeted to kill cells that are rapidly dividing by interfering with processes
that occur during cell division.

Radiation therapy, or "ionizing radiation", is used to kill cancer cells and to limit the spread of cancer.
New treatments for mesothelioma include tri-modality therapy, which consists of aggressive surgery,
aggressive chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Find out about the treatment
options of mesothelioma with information from an oncologist in this free video on types of cancer.
Photodynamic therapy is a highly specialized and specific form of treatment that is most often used to treat skin cancers,
some types of lung cancer, and pleural mesothelioma.
In order to create the most effective treatment option for every patient, doctors are using a number of different methods
to treat mesothelioma, a cancer of the chest and lungs caused by exposure to asbestos. Photodynamic
therapy aims to kill cancer cells by using a light of a specific wavelength to stop growth and prevent further spread.
Gene therapy involves using genetic material to specifically target cancer cells and make them more vulnerable to chemotherapy treatment.
